The food in Thailand was a highlight of mine. Fresh, flavoursome and cheap…what more could you want! I have three recommendations for you: a local Thai restaurant, a place when you want to learn to cook and lastly, somewhere relaxing when you are just craving western food.
Green Bird Restaurant:
Located in the centre of Chaweng, in a somewhat market environment, is Green Bird Restaurant. This place doesn’t really appeal to the eye, but given the number of people who eat there every day, you can tell it must be good. The menu has an array of all sorts of traditional Thai dishes. We ate here 3 times in the space of a week, as we loved it so much! The food is so full of flavour and the ingredients taste so fresh. I can highly recommend their Pad Thai, Basil & Chili Curry, Green Curry, Papaya Salad and Spring Rolls (basically everything!). The food is not only amazing- I had the best Pad Thai on the island here- but, it won’t cost you much at all. The Pad Thai, which is massive and could definitely serve two, will set you back $2AUD. If you are going to Koh Samui, you really have to try this restaurant out. 100% the best Thai food on the island.
Smiley Cook Cooking Class:
Another thing to do on the island is to take a cooking class. You will not only be able to learn how to make your favourite Thai dishes but you’ll also get to experience shopping at the local markets. We went with Smiley Cook Cooking Class, which were great! The classes are small (4-5 people), allowing you to really learn. We were picked up and dropped back to our hotel and the staff were really friendly. The cooking class is taken outside and you can either choose to do the morning or afternoon session. I really recommend the 4pm session, as you can then enjoy all the delicious meals you made, for dinner! The price of this cooking class is pretty average, in comparison to other companies on the island.
Finally, a recommendation for those times when you are craving western food. COAST, which is associated with the Grand Centara Beach Resort, is situated right on Chaweng Beach. With extremely comfortable seats on the beach, you’ll find yourself sitting there for hours. This place does seriously amazing woodfired pizzas (who would have thought), amazing cocktails…which come on their own seats, and all round amazing fresh, delicious food. The pricing of the food at Coast is a little more like at an Australian restaurant, with the pizza costing around $18aud. The cocktails are however, a lot cheaper! I do think that the price is justified, as the setting, atmosphere, fit out and food are all top quality.
Well there you have it. Three food recommendations, for three different occasions, in Koh Samui, Thailand.
