The Fisherman’s Village located on the northern end of Koh Samui, Thailand, is an area full of colour, life and charm. This area of Koh Samui is a little quieter than that of Chaweng, and boasts a long list of things to do. After heading to CoCo Tam’s for a sunset drink, make your way to the main street of the town, for some delicious dinner. After dinner you can wander the streets, making your way through the large number of little Thai boutiques. However, if you time your trip to the Fisherman’s Village perfectly, then you have to go on a Friday evening.
Every Friday night, the area hosts the Fisherman’s Village Night Street Markets. They run from 5pm-11pm every Friday night and really aren’t to be missed if you find yourself in Koh Samui on a Friday. They are located on the main walking street of the town, providing amazing scenery and stalls. The markets have hundreds of stalls, offering a variety things from amazing street food, local handmade products, to fake designer goods and everything in between. As our nerves set in prior to attending the markets, we actually had dinner at one of the local restaurants. This is a massive regret, as the food at the stalls of the market, looked amazing! All the stories of food poisoning from street food in Thailand may be true, but if you are smart about what you buy to eat, you’ll not only be fine but you’ll enjoy some incredible food. So despite already being full prior to attending the markets, we couldn’t help but try some of the street food. We got this freshly made papaya salad, which was made right in front of you, with extremely fresh looking ingredients, by this local Thai lady. This dish was not only the cheapest meal we paid for ($2), but was also the most delicious (and spicy)! So I do say try out the street food, but don’t go for the chicken skewers that have clearly been sitting their for hours, in 35 degree heat.
The atmosphere of the markets is so fun, and you really will be able to find some great bargains here. I really loved going to the Fisherman’s Village Night Market and highly recommend going. It was definitely a highlight of my time in Koh Samui!
