Our day trip to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan was honestly a highlight of my year! Just a 1.5hr boat trip away from Koh Samui in Thailand, lies the islands of Koh Tao (Turtle Island) and Koh Nang Yuan (Three small islands). These islands are small slices of paradise in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand.
You can book through a number of different companies based in Koh Samui. We ended up going with Angthong Discovery Tour and I’m so glad we did! We were picked up from our hotel at around 7:45am and taken to the port. All the staff were so friendly and it felt pretty well organised. Once everyone had arrived, we boarded the speed boat. Now, one of the reasons we chose to go with this company, was due to the quality of their boats. They kept them in pristine condition! There were about 20 people in total on our boat, which is a lot less than I saw some companies take, so it made the ride a lot more comfortable. The trip itself took around 1.5hrs and was pretty stunning on its own. The three members of the crew were so fun, and always made sure everyone was alright.
Our first destination was off the edge of Koh Nang Yuan. The boat stopped in the middle of the ocean (or what felt like the middle of the ocean) and we were able to jump directly off the boat and go snorkelling. This was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had whilst travelling. The water was crystal clear and the area was home to an abundance of fish. It was seriously incredible! We were not only able to see all sorts of sea life, but I got the experience of jumping off the front of the boat. Boy oh boy was it fun!! The company does provide snorkels for each customer, but we brought our own. After snorkelling for over 1 hour, we got back on the boat and headed to the larger island, Koh Tao. Here we stopped for a buffet lunch, and it was surprising very yummy. This island is a lot bigger than Koh Nang Yuan, and we only stopped for a quick lunch. However, the beach was so beautiful. I must say, the beaches of Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan are much nicer than those of Koh Samui.
After lunch we went to back to Koh Nang Yuan. However, this time we went onto the actual island. This part was a lot busier, where as the first part of the trip was literally our boat. We couldn’t see anyone else around, which was magical. You can go on a short hike up to the top of one of the three islands, where you are presented with the most stunning view. I must say, the hike up is rough! Considering I was only wearing thongs, and you literally have to scale boulders, I’m proud I even made it up! It really is worth the pain though. I highly recommend doing this (your insta will thank you…)!
The snorkelling at the beaches here wasn’t quite as good as it was just jumping off the boat, as there were a lot more tourists and the sand was so rocky. It was still absolutely stunning, with the most beautiful turquoise water I have ever seen! Something great about Koh Nang Yuan is that no plastic can be taken onto the island. It does seem a little annoying for visitors, but it keeps the island so much cleaner than that of Koh Samui.
After a good couple of hours chilling out, we headed back to Koh Samui on the speed boat. Oh and our amazing tour guide gave us some cold, delicious pineapple and watermelon. That was seriously amazing after a day in the sun.The company then dropped us back to our hotel at around 5pm.
I could not recommend this trip enough and highly recommend going with Angthong Discovery Tour. The staff were so great at their jobs, and the way the day trip was structured, was so much better than other companies we looked at. This day will go down as one of the best of 2016, if not one of the best of my life. Can you tell I loved it, yet?
