As January 26th rolled around, so did Australia Day. The day where all Aussies chuck a snag on the BBQ, whip up a pav (pavlova) and eat copious amounts of Vegemite toast. Being 15,000km away from home and only having one fellow Aussie here with me did not stop the celebrations that began as all my friends and family at home went to bed. Facing a few hurdles, we swapped the pav with some lamingtons and ANZAC biscuits and brought out a good old pack of classic Tim Tams.
One thing I must mention is how incredibly hard it was to find basic beef sausages. They just do not exist in this little South Carolina town, and we therefore had to make do with the German inspired Bratwursts that we found. They were surprisingly delicious.
Introducing these Australian delicacies to my American friends was extremely successful (minus the Vegemite) and hilarious. Having a fellow Aussie to celebrate with made for yet another incredible Australia Day (even if we are 15,000km away from home).
