After a three hour bumpy bus ride, driving through all sorts of weather conditions at 7am on an autumn morning, we arrived in Charleston. Charleston is an historical city located on the coast of South Carolina and is one of the most recommended places to visit in the United States. This trip organised by my university was so incredibly exciting and well worth the wait! I was lucky enough to be accompanied by some of my amazing team mates, who provided much needed entertainment on this long journey.
We were finally able to stretch our legs and our adventure began when we arrived at the Charleston Tanger Outlets. With much self constraint, I resisted the urge to buy a number of amazing items that to me were complete and utter bargains, that although I seriously wanted, I really didn’t need. After browsing the aisles of Nike, Adidas, J-Crew and one of my American favourites, Bath and Body Works, we jumped back on the bus for part 2 of our adventure…the Citadel College Football game!
No words can fully describe an American College football game. It was honestly like nothing I have ever experienced. From the thousands of fans, to the camera crews, to the massive stadium, I couldn’t help but think “this is ONLY a college football game”. The game itself was utterly confusing for both myself and my British friend, even though the person sitting next to me was constantly commentating and explaining the rules. A game that should technically only be played for 1 hour, lasted 4 hours! With the advent of each ‘down’ or ‘play’, the entire team, consisting of approximate 150 people, gathered in a huddle and had, what seemed to me, a chat. This happened every time the team got slightly further down the field! I personally think if they were to not do this, the game wouldn’t last 4 hours and the crowd wouldn’t get bored. Nonetheless, it was yet another fantastic experience where I thought I was in a movie. The times in the game when a team made some progress and scored, it was incredibly exciting and the atmosphere was fabulous! When the game finally came to a close and a team had won, we made our way to our final destination…downtown Charleston, or in other words, shopping central, home to hundreds of amazing American and international stores!
We arrived just before the sun set and for the short amount of day we had left, the center of Charleston was absolutely beautiful. The cobble stone streets were lined with spectacular historic brick buildings, which were home to some of my favourite stores! We firstly explored the Charleston City Markets home to an array of stalls with all sorts of jewelry, food, clothes and Christmas decorations!
After exploring the markets it was time for us to go shopping along King Street, home to Kate Spade, Anthropolie, Urban Outfitters and many other amazing shops! After shopping for 2.5 hours, we ate some much needed dinner before getting back on the bus for another 3 hours. My Charleston trip was a fantastic weekend adventure and I recommend everyone to visit if they ever get the chance!
