Having heard that the Carolina’s were home to some exceptional mountains and outdoor adventures, I had been keen to head out and see their beauty. The weekend finally arrived and so did the adventure of hiking up the Looking Glass Rock in Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina.
We arrived at the beginning of the trail with 5 layers on to stay warm in the -2 degree weather. However, one layer came off every time we ventured higher and higher and slowly began to get sweatier and sweatier. The steep trail climbs 1700ft over a 5.5km hike there and back. The trek up sure was exhausting and demanding, as we held on to nearby trees to make our way over the various obstacles. It took around 2 and a half hours to finally reach the top, mind you that included several stops for amazing ‘photo opportunities’. Just as you think the trail is never going to end, you turn the corner and see an amazing view overlooking the mountains of North Carolina.
It is safe to say the long and tiring journey to the summit was definitely worth it for the spectacular view that was presented to us. The icy wind hit your face as you sat on the rock with the sun beaming down on you, while gazing out to the amazing mountains covered with thousands of colourful autumnal trees. This experience was even more fantastic as it was my first time seeing real autumn trees.
The mountains in the south east of America really are spectacular, with stunning views not only at the summit but also throughout the trek. My hiking adventure was one of the best things I have done whilst here and I can’t wait to do it again.
