Grease, sugar and chicken. The three main ingredients for basically all food here in the south. To me, the thought of indulging in this makes me feel a little ill. But to a lot of people here, it’s normal and they don’t think twice about it. I knew that the time would finally come when I would have to try the ever so special, Southern food.
For months before arriving in the States, I had heard so many things online about the infamous restaurant, iHop (International House of Pancakes). A whole store devoted to pancakes. For a pancake lover, like myself, this sounds like a dream come true! So it was inevitable that I would have to try the pancakes from this diner style restaurant. My expectations were high but unfortunately, not really met. The strawberry pancakes I ordered suited the diner atmosphere. They really weren’t great and honestly, I’m not sure I’d make the effort to go back. But, all in all, the experience of going was fantastic. After seeing so many YouTube vlogers going to iHop, being there felt like I was in a movie. It was the epitome of an American diner full of people of all ages, enjoying breakfast on a Saturday morning.
Chicken, chicken and more chicken. It seems as though chicken is definitely a staple food here in the South and I’m pretty sure without it, people would not survive. The majority of restaurants revolve around chicken, so luckily I’m a fan of it. So it was time for me to immerse myself into the Southern culture and eat chicken wings! Along with some friends, I ventured one evening down to the local Wild Wings restaurant. And you guessed it…all they serve are chicken wings. The fit-out of the place was straight out of a movie with wooden booths and all sorts of paraphernalia on the walls. This was the first time I had tried wings, so I was a little confused on how to even order them. With an array of flavours to choose from, the possibilities were endless. Whilst at Wild Wings I was ‘lucky’ enough to try some of my friends cheesy, bacon fries. As I ate this I could feel the fat entering my system. Yep, I was definitely eating Southern American food. It’s safe to say I would be eating salads for the next week after consuming this meal.
My food adventure in the South has only just begun and there sure is a whole lot more out there for me to try. I will just need to remember to exercise excessively after each meal.
